It ends as it began, with a simple green line drawing - tousled hair and mock turtleneck, large glasses and double chin.

It ends as it began, and yet it doesn't. I'm much more facile now, the drawings have a different ease. I'm much more confident - not worried about the muse leaving me, knowing that if I draw every day I'll get some duds and some beauties, and neither matters very much, because it's the process of engaging with the visual world which compels me.

It ends as it began except it doesn't. The first drawing was done with magic markers on paper and this one was done with my finger on my iPod Touch using the Brushes App. The first one was done staring in a mirror, this one was done staring at a live video feed on my computer.

It ends as it began except... the world and I have both changed in these three years.

It ends... and something new starts. To celebrate I'm throwing a Portrait Party - lots of artists exchanging photos and drawing each other from them.

Literally fell asleep after each stroke on this one. I think this is the closest I've come to actually not completing a self-portrait since I started this almost three years ago. But - phew! - managed to get it "done".

It's a good thing I wasn't using real paint, because my face would be a mess from the two times I fell over asleep while doing this. Of course I probably wouldn't be attempting to paint with real paint while in bed - though I believe both Matisse and DeKooning did so in their later years.

Apparently staph lives all over most of us but our healthy autoimmune systems deal with it. When your autoimmune system is compromised, on the other hand, you become susceptible to infection when exposed...

Looking at all the self-portraits dated 3/1 that I just uploaded to Flickr, I see that...

Twenty years ago at this time, I had just moved across the country for a dubious business venture.

Nineteen years ago at this time, I had a brief spate of almost-daily self-portraits in a bound drawing journal - and was wondering how to sort out the bad business venture.

Two years ago at this time, I was sick with a nasty virus.

Last year at this time I was extremely stressed at work.

This year I'm stressed at home.

Funny the unexpected life patterns that become visible from the simple act of making drawings.

BTW things at home are going in the right direction, but it's all still quite exhausting.
