iDraw: Among the Potted Plants

'Among the Potted Plants' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) In my mother's feminist household, these were always called "'snake plant"' but despite its political incorrectness I prefer the more colorful "mother-in-law's tongue", another common name for the same plant.

The Trees of Wesleyan

'The Trees of Wesleyan' cut paper self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I didn't go to my 25th reunion this summer, but the Wesleyan fundraising folks sent a very fancy brochure with many nice pictures and I imagined myself back on campus, sitting under a tree and studying.

And for those wondering about the technical details, this was made with colored electrical tape.

I Like to Bring the Forest Indoors

'I Like to Bring the Forest Indoors' acrylic paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay in which she is dwarfed by a dingle leaf of a split=leaf philodendron. (Click to view same image larger.) But sometimes it seems my jungle plants are taking over my studio.

Active Rest

'Active Rest' watercolor self-portrait from imagination by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Active rest is a term we use in the Alexander Technique to refer to lying in this position and consciously directing yourself to let go of all unnecessary tension. You definitely should not be worrying about whether there's going to be an earthquake which causes the ladder to fall on you.

Huddled in Front of My Tropical Plants in My Four Pom-Pom Hat

I'd say it was green for St. Patrick's Day but in fact it was just coincidence. And for those that might have heard there was a fire in SF this evening, while it was near enough to be a district that we eat in fairly often, it was far enough away from where we live to not be threatening.

Vermont Street

There are fabulous trees in the Berkeley hills, where I went to exchange Alexander work with my friend Amira Alvarez. While you're waiting for me to get my certification (at least another 1.5 years), if you're in the East Bay, I recommend that you take some lessons from her!

Silly Sleeping Hat and Philodendron

'Silly Sleeping Hat and Philodendron' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) It's been a week of quick drawings, but it seems to me even the quick ones have a greater assurance than at the beginning of this project 7 months ago. Detail of 'Silly Sleeping Hat and Philodendron' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)

In the Palm Jungle at Ritual Gardens

'In the Jungle at Ritual Gardens' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Sometimes, when you draw with a knife, you end up with two drawings instead of one. Technically these are at Ritual Cafe at Flora Grubb Gardens, where we have enjoyed excellent coffee and purchased a few exquisite plants. Detail of 'In the Jungle at Ritual Gardens' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)
