iDraw: Dizzy

I imagined myself as one of the horizontal riders on one of Marino Marini's near-vertical horses. He usually called these pieces "The Miracle" but dizzy is how I imagined it.

iDraw: Something Every Woman Can Relate To

I was listening to an interesting program on the radio about providing prom dresses to homeless young women, when I was quite surprised to hear the following assertion, "It's something every woman can relate to, putting on a dress that makes you feel good and beautiful." I dare say some of us feel good and beautiful without a dress, some don't desire to feel good and beautiful, and others feel better in a suit (a tux is best!).

iDraw: A Face

'iDraw: A Face' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I downloaded a new drawing program for my iPod Touch, Paintbook, and one interesting feature it has is saving your image at very high resolution. The detail is the right corner of the mouth.

End of Semester Conference

'End of Semester Conference' acrylic paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)This painting was done from a photo of the last end of semester conference in The Alexander Education Center's previous location, about a year ago.

Last night I went on a painting spree and also made these 5 riffs on Giacometti' 1964 painting of James Lord.

Giacojulia

'Giacojulia' watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Artist of the month? Alberto Giacometti. This was based on his "Portrait of Madame Marguerite Maeght, 1961", which (gasp) does not seem to be available on the internet for me to link to.

Be Afraid, Very Afraid

I can look at a de Kooning and make these sort of interesting images that don't actually look like de Koonings. But if I look at myself, or at nothing, and try to make a similar drawing - well, it doesn't work. I can see what he drew, and how it relates to reality. But when I look at reality, I can't see what he might have drawn. And I can't see what I might draw in response to what he might have drawn... Never mind, this is getting too complicated.

Trying to Channel De Kooning

'OILPASTEL' oil pastel self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) ...but definitely not getting it. That's Willem de Kooning, though Elaine de Kooning was also an interesting painter. If he was a misogynist, as the feminists claim based on his imagery, not his actions, then I guess I am too. He was a fabulous painter and I think his images of women are really great.

Self-Portrait as a Dancing Swirly Girl

'Self-Portrait as a Dancing Swirly Girl' magic marker self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) My goal was to draw a face using the Doodle Top Dottie gave Ann, however something else happened, no doubt influenced by this morning's perusal of David Friedheim's Scribble & Wiggle

That Monet was a Brilliant Dude

'That Monet was a Brilliant Dude'acrylic paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Brilliant use of color anyway!

In the process of moving things around to accommodate ongoing construction on the house and my studio, I unearthed some of my mother's art books... soon all the art books will have a proper home built-in between studio and bedroom - I can't wait. In any event, Monet seemed to fit right in with my recent foliage explorations.
