iDraw: Moving My Ten Foot Tall Painting: 2009.08.04

This weekend I had to take down and move my 8 by 10 foot painting, 'Medusa of the Annunciation'. Many thanks to my fantastic crew: Guy, Melissa, Nicola & Martin. More thanks to Martin & Margaret for providing a temporary home for this monster.

Mirrored Elevator Doors

Conference Hotel Room

Last month I was at the Whitcomb Hotel in San Francisco, California, USA, for the Annual General Meeting of the American Society for the Alexander Technique. I wasn't staying at the hotel, but some of my friends were, so when we needed to take a break, we hung out in their room.

This was done in the traditional way with a pen on paper.

iDraw: Hills Bros Plaza Beneath the San Francisco Bay Bridge

Carnaval in the Mission and a blanket of fog over the city allowed us an unmobbed stroll down the Embarcadero to the refurbished for foodies Ferry Building, where we did our part for America by buying ourselves a few tasty treats.

I imagined that instead of Pacifc Gas & Electric waking us up at 7:30 AM all month, I was operating the equipment outside the home of the PG & E supervisor or whichever brilliant San Francisco governing board decided construction noise could start that early.

I'm Going to Have to Get Bifocals

'I'm Going to Have to Get Bifocals' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Switching between two pairs of glasses all the time has been driving me crazy. It's especially bad at meetings when I need to switch between seeing people in the room and reading handouts. On the other hand, bifocals cut down on your peripheral vision - I'm sure that will drive me crazy, too.

Return of the Handeze

Along with the tingling and pain, when my RSI flares up, it seems like circulation is poor in my arms, and my hands tend to get very cold. Handeze are fingerless gloves made of a stretchy nylon, designed specifically to keep your hands warm while typing. They do come in beige, but I prefer the black.

iDraw: I Imagined Myself as Edith Head

We've been having a Columbo fest, and I've been meaning to draw myself as Columbo, but tonight I couldn't resist Hollywood costume designer Edith Head, who made a guest appearance as herself on the Columbo episode we watched this evening. Seeing her we also realized that Edith clearly was the inspiration for the costume designer Edna in The Incredibles.

iDraw: This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear Show at SFMoMA

'This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I highly recommend going to see the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA - and go soon because the show ends 1/25/09! Of course photography was not permitted, but drawing seemed to be OK (it isn't always). The piece I'm standing next to is called 'Maroon' and it's not quite as big as I've made it - though Puryear's beautiful hand-carved and fitted wood, rattan, and tar pieces are quite large-scale.

On the Bench

'On the Bench' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)It's interesting how the easy part is sometimes the hardest - I thought my face would be hardest, but it's the bench I messed up! This was in NYC, and, no, there wasn't an earthquake in progress - the bench wasn't even tilting! I'm guessing I was about a year old but I don't know for sure. Although my photographer father carefully noted how long he exposed each print, there are no dates on the photos I'm working from for these drawings.

Daddy Sticks His Tongue Out

Thursday, January 1, 2009

The New Year always makes me reflect on time passing, so here's a flash from the past. However, these days I look more like my dad did at my age than like the little girl in a velvet dress that I once was. (I guess even feminist mom gave in to the cute factor on occasion)

Best Stocking Stuffer

'Best Stocking Stuffer' watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Mini Paint Set! I wanted to try painting with just what was provided - the mini pans, the tiny brush, mixing in the lid. As it turns out, the paints seem OK but the brush is extremely difficult to work with. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow using a better brush... Poor little paint set is no longer so pristine, either.

Flashback: Maryland Crab at O'Brycki's

'Flashback: Maryland Crab at O'Brycki's' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Having crab for dinner this evening reminded me that we all went out for crab at O'Brycki's last time I was in Baltimore. All in this case means me and the fabulous sculptors Trisha Kyner and David Friedheim.

The Trees of Wesleyan

'The Trees of Wesleyan' cut paper self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I didn't go to my 25th reunion this summer, but the Wesleyan fundraising folks sent a very fancy brochure with many nice pictures and I imagined myself back on campus, sitting under a tree and studying.

And for those wondering about the technical details, this was made with colored electrical tape.

Last Day Feeding Minnie... Until Next Time

Yes, it is a self-portrait - that's my hand scratching Minnie's neck.

And here's to Mom... she's been in my thoughts all day on this, the 4th anniversary of her death.

What Goes Up, Must Come Down

'What Goes Up, Must Come Down' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Six months ago, we carried my 8' X 4' painting, "Reluctant Goddess of the Houseplants', up 5 flights of stairs. The show was over so it had to come back down. It went incredibly smoothly, with only one Dirk Gently moment where we thought it might be stuck in the bend of the stairwell forever. Many, many thanks to Guy & Melissa, the best painting moving team ever, and to Martin for providing a new home for it.

My landscapes have gotton better but my architectural drafting is still not very good - this was such a good subject (more thanks to Melissa for the photos!) I couldn't resist it even though I really couldn't do it justice. After I get the next show hung maybe I'll do an architectural series and see where that leads me...

'A Touch of Mink' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) In honor of Halloween I imagined myself costumed for the Bergdorf Goodman fashion show in the 1962 Doris Day/Cary Grant flick 'A Touch of Mink' that we watched this evening. Kudos to AK for suggesting it!
