iDraw: Moving My Ten Foot Tall Painting: 2009.08.04

This weekend I had to take down and move my 8 by 10 foot painting, 'Medusa of the Annunciation'. Many thanks to my fantastic crew: Guy, Melissa, Nicola & Martin. More thanks to Martin & Margaret for providing a temporary home for this monster.

I'm Going to Have to Get Bifocals

'I'm Going to Have to Get Bifocals' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Switching between two pairs of glasses all the time has been driving me crazy. It's especially bad at meetings when I need to switch between seeing people in the room and reading handouts. On the other hand, bifocals cut down on your peripheral vision - I'm sure that will drive me crazy, too.

Return of the Handeze

Along with the tingling and pain, when my RSI flares up, it seems like circulation is poor in my arms, and my hands tend to get very cold. Handeze are fingerless gloves made of a stretchy nylon, designed specifically to keep your hands warm while typing. They do come in beige, but I prefer the black.

The Portrait Project is Two!

'The Portrait Project is Two!' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I've been doing this every day for two years now... amazing! If I was going to change it - still make an image every day but not necessarily get some part of myself in each one - what change or new theme would you most like to see?

Another Kind of Proportional Divider

'Another Kind of Proportional Divider' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) This one is an extremely useful moderne device which measures a wall and tells you where to hammer the nails when you want to hang a series of same-size paintings spaced evenly on a wall. Recommended for anyone hanging their own shows!

iDraw: Hello to Lim Ding Wen!

Lim Ding Wen is a 9 year old computer programmer in Singapore who wrote Doodle Kids, a free iPhone/iTouch drawing program intended for kids, which I used to make today's portrait of me waving at him across the ether. Thank-you Lim Ding Wen for this fun application!

Best Stocking Stuffer

'Best Stocking Stuffer' watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Mini Paint Set! I wanted to try painting with just what was provided - the mini pans, the tiny brush, mixing in the lid. As it turns out, the paints seem OK but the brush is extremely difficult to work with. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow using a better brush... Poor little paint set is no longer so pristine, either.

Last Day Feeding Minnie... Until Next Time

Yes, it is a self-portrait - that's my hand scratching Minnie's neck.

And here's to Mom... she's been in my thoughts all day on this, the 4th anniversary of her death.

That Monet was a Brilliant Dude

'That Monet was a Brilliant Dude'acrylic paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Brilliant use of color anyway!

In the process of moving things around to accommodate ongoing construction on the house and my studio, I unearthed some of my mother's art books... soon all the art books will have a proper home built-in between studio and bedroom - I can't wait. In any event, Monet seemed to fit right in with my recent foliage explorations.

Ralph Lauren Power

'Ralph Lauren Power' cut paper self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay of her hand raised in a fist made from Ralph Lauren paint chips. (Click to view same image larger.) Another entry in my bad High School poster art series (the other one was my illustration of getting vaccinations before my trip to Thailand last year.) In any event, it sure looks political, but my only intentions were form and color and continuing to play with my 10+ years of collected paint chips.

'Kirigami!' cut and old fold paper self-portraits of her hands by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay - - here the first hand is opened up and found to be almost unrecognizably abstract. (Click to view same image larger.) 'Kirigami!' cut and old fold paper self-portraits of her hands by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay - here the second hand is opened up and found to be a spinning wheel of hands. (Click to view same image larger.) Tomorrow I'm giving a kirigami paper cut demonstration to the Los Gatos Art Association, so this evening I made two kirigami paper cuts of my hands holding scissors. As you can see, they look pretty similar when folded up, but quite different unfolded.

Sadly, the carpets were rolled up and put into storage as it was The Alexander Educational Center's last day at beautiful St. John's. When class starts up again in the fall, we'll be at our new digs on 6th Street in Berkeley.
