Rawlston Masaniai Was at it Again

'Rawlston Masaniai Was at it Again' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay showing her exhaustion after her neighbor, Rawlston Masaniai, once again cranked up the music in the middle of the night and woke her up at 3 am. (Click to view same image larger.) Last week on Wednesday, this week on Tuesday - he woke both of us with thumping music at 3AM. Has he no mercy? We've spoken to him, we've sent him letters, today we spoke to him on the phone. He always promises it won't happen again, but guess what... he doesn't keep his word.

Pencil Sketch, Day 2

'Pencil Sketch, Day 2' graphite self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) When I started this on May 13th, I thought I'd get back to it much sooner. I have at least another day or two of work here... maybe over this lovely long weekend. Detail of 'Pencil Sketch, Day 2' graphite self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. Facial Mask on Metal in Oil

'Mask on Metal in Oil' oil paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I'm guessing about the date, although I clearly remember making it, it was definitely early on at the 32nd St. studio. I was still struggling to make the transition from drawing (press harder or make more marks to make a darker or thicker mark) to painting (mix a new color to make a darker mark, use a bigger brush to make a thicker mark.) They really are very different processes but I haven't thought about it explicitly in a long time. Now (2007), I just switch back and forth without even thinking about it much.
