iDraw: No Sense of Harmony, No Sense of Time

'No Sense of Harmony, No Sense of Time' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) The song then continues "And I'm blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind, blind", which is what I was when I made this drawing. Right-handed, though.

Wooly Julia

'Wooly Julia' digitally altered magic marker self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)

The latest little ap we've downloaded to my iPod touch is Wooly Willy, which allows you to draw 'magnetic shaving' mustaches and other hair on either the traditional Wooly Willy image or any image of your own. Here Ann and I have collaborated in giving a previous portrait some additional facial hair. The truth is my eyebrows are a little wild and getting wilder as I get older - so this may not be so far from some future truth. As Picasso famously replied when told Gertrude Stein did not look like his portrait of her "She will...".

This image also seems apropos of printmaker printmaker Ruth Paesch & my attempt to see the Frida Kahlo show at SFMoMA today... I can't say I was directly influenced by the show, however, because the museum was having a power outage and we went to Ocean Beach instead.

Ann says as long as I'm mentioning such fabulous women as Ruth, Gertrude and Frida, let's not forget Patti Smith.

OK, bed time...

Still Not a Disco (Final Version)

'Still Not a Disco (Final Version)' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I adore light. And color. As if that wasn't perfectly clear.

And Happy Birthday to my father - he's wherever it is people go when they're no longer here with us. He gave me my first camera, and thus my first tool for capturing ever-changing, fleeting, world-defining light. Thanks, Dad!

Late Lunch at Park Chow

'Late Lunch at Park Chow' crayon self-portrait drawing by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Often when we eat at Park Chow, we ask for a crayon set up and draw while we wait for our food. The colors in our crayon cup weren't very exciting today but I went ahead and drew this picture of myself while waiting for my pizza with spring veg and arugula. Mmmm... Never Mind the Evil Poodle

'Never Mind The Evil Poodle', a self-portrait by Julia Kay, which links to a larger image of the same drawing. For a change of pace, I was going to draw an evil poodle whose photo I found on the internet but it didn't start out well and I returned to my stated purpose - drawing myself. Meanwhile, for the second day in a row, I've finished past midnight into the next day but cheated the post time so it fits the day it's intended for...Detail of 'Never Mind The Evil Poodle', a self-portrait by Julia Kay, which links to a larger image of the same detail.

Pink Ink

'Pink Ink' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. I just made this one up without reference to mirror or photo... I guess it doesn't look any less like me than any of the others! Strange how inclined I am to push the eyes together, unable to allow the proper space between the twin beams of attention... Photos Don't Solve Everything

But they free me up to put more attention on different aspects of the picture, like keeping the colors from getting muddy.

But is it cheating to work from photographs, to use projecters, to trace? These methods have their satisfactions and their dissatisfactions.

Chinese Sharpies

Today I bought myself more colors of my favorite too-expensive brush markers, then came home and made this entirely out of extremely cheap fake sharpies from the corner store. Pungent and likely toxic, not very long-lasting and even apt to come apart when you take the caps off, they nevertheless make very satisfying, rich, wet, thick marks. Too bad I've bought them out and don't exepct to find them again.
