iDraw: Julia Knows Whose Nose - Her Nose!

This was done on my iDevice using the new version of the Squiggles App, which has a few really great features such as cut and paste, and saving your working colors to a palette. However, it is not nearly as flexible as some other apps as a full-fledged artist app.

iDraw: I Don't Have a TV but I Watch Alot of Star Trek

'iDraw: I Don't Have a TV but I Watch Alot of Star Trek' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Even after all the different series and characters and species and adventures, if I'm going to imagine myself as a known person in that universe, it's still Mr. Spock.

You Rang?

'You Rang?' acrylic paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Lurching into the new week... the process for this piece was a game I sometimes play.. to use up all the leftover paint on my palette and not take out anything new.

iDraw: Not Bad in Plaid

'Not Bad in Plaid' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Well, I read all the complaints in the reviews of Scratch Away for the iPod Touch but I'm such a fan of making 'Scratch Art' that I decided to buy it (for $.99) anyway. The concept is great but the implementation leaves alot to be desired - you can't import an image to be the pattern underneath to be revealed, can't save work in progress to continue scratching, can't make the menu bar at the bottom hide, can't change underlying patterns mid-drawing, choosing a new pattern makes your work disappear without a save dialog box, your work sometimes just disappears - and in my experience not just because it's easy to accidentally touch the patterns on the menu bar which are the known way to start over, and the saved images are extremely jaggy (as can be seen here).

I have played quite a bit with 'real-world' scratch-art children's products for making art. On the web, you can see that I made some scratch art self portraits for this project and I also did a series of drawings of stair cases.

Portrait with a Green Stripe

'Portrait with a Green Stripe' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) This is after Henri Matisse's 'Portrait with a Green Stripe' but in the reproduction I was using, the two sides of the face were much more similar in color, both yellow ochre. I thought this would be a simple exercise - bold lines, flatish colors - but this was that quite common case where an image that looks simple, simply isn't.

'Rain Dance!' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Hmmm... can this have worked? I made this this morning after several sunny days - and now it's raining! Detail of 'Rain Dance!' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)

In the Palm Jungle at Ritual Gardens

'In the Jungle at Ritual Gardens' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Sometimes, when you draw with a knife, you end up with two drawings instead of one. Technically these are at Ritual Cafe at Flora Grubb Gardens, where we have enjoyed excellent coffee and purchased a few exquisite plants. Quick Sketch

Quick self-portrait with magic markers. That was fun... surely I can find time to do at least this much every day?
