iDraw: Stealing From Myself

'Stealing From Myself' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) The source for some of these recent images is neither the mirror nor a photo, but rather my own previous drawings of myself (mostly drawings that I considered less successful in their original incarnations.)

iDraw: I Used to Have Long Hair

'I Used to Have Long Hair' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) When I had long hair, I wore it pulled back alot, and my self-portraits often looked like I had short hair. (Here's an example) So here's one to balance it out - a portrait harkening back to my long-hair days when in reality I had it cut quite short last weekend.

iDraw: Among the Potted Plants

'Among the Potted Plants' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) In my mother's feminist household, these were always called "'snake plant"' but despite its political incorrectness I prefer the more colorful "mother-in-law's tongue", another common name for the same plant.

Last Day Feeding Minnie... Until Next Time

Yes, it is a self-portrait - that's my hand scratching Minnie's neck.

And here's to Mom... she's been in my thoughts all day on this, the 4th anniversary of her death.

What Goes Up, Must Come Down

'What Goes Up, Must Come Down' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Six months ago, we carried my 8' X 4' painting, "Reluctant Goddess of the Houseplants', up 5 flights of stairs. The show was over so it had to come back down. It went incredibly smoothly, with only one Dirk Gently moment where we thought it might be stuck in the bend of the stairwell forever. Many, many thanks to Guy & Melissa, the best painting moving team ever, and to Martin for providing a new home for it.

My landscapes have gotton better but my architectural drafting is still not very good - this was such a good subject (more thanks to Melissa for the photos!) I couldn't resist it even though I really couldn't do it justice. After I get the next show hung maybe I'll do an architectural series and see where that leads me...

I Voted on This Historic Day!

'I Voted on This Historic Day!' pen and watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) And I sure hope that if you're an adult citizen of the USA, you voted, too! (I have four receipts because we have so many state and local initiatives, there are four pages of ballot to fill out!)

Shopping for Rugs at Ikea

'Shopping for Rugs at Ikea' watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) 'Shopping for Rugs at Ikea' pencil sketch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I was helping Dottie figure out if there were any appropriate rugs at Ikea for her new apartment - but not all the rugs had sizes & prices on the floor nor were they all in the catlogue, making it very difficult to figure out. Now don't groan - there's an art to getting in and out of Ikea without getting lost (and preferably without buying anything). It's called Ikea-do. Wish I had a black belt in it but I don't ;)

Organs, Organs, Where are my Organs?

'Organs, Organs, Where are my Organs?' pencil and watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) As part of my Alexander Technique Teacher Training, I'm learning some anatomy - but coloring in the Anatomy Coloring Book doesn't really work for me - to understand things I have to try to draw them myself. Too bad organs don't actually come in these nice colors.

'Meditating on One Year of the Portrait Project' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)OK, you recognize the gear, I was actually meditating after Aikido. But I have been thinking about today's anniversary and how fun this on-going process has been for me. And thank-you to Jeff, for a different photographic view of my head than I usually get.

Home with a Cold, in a Sea of Stripes (Final)

'Home with a Cold, in a Sea of Stripes (Final)' self-portrait in ink by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I had a misguided idea that after doing this I'd be able to 'simply' layer color washes over it for full color, but after some failed exper-imentation on the side, I have decided to leave quite well enough alone. Detail of 'Purple Goggles, Green Shadows' magic marker self-portrait drawing by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Too Young to be a Blue-Haired Lady

'Too Young to be a Blue-Haired Lady' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. Sometimes it's clear what the picture is about, and form, color, expression and title just fall into place. That was not the case here - this one's really waiting for a better title - feel free to suggest something! Detail of Too Young to be a Blue-Haired Lady' self-portrait by Julia Kay.
