I'm Going to Have to Get Bifocals

'I'm Going to Have to Get Bifocals' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Switching between two pairs of glasses all the time has been driving me crazy. It's especially bad at meetings when I need to switch between seeing people in the room and reading handouts. On the other hand, bifocals cut down on your peripheral vision - I'm sure that will drive me crazy, too.

The Portrait Project is Two!

'The Portrait Project is Two!' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I've been doing this every day for two years now... amazing! If I was going to change it - still make an image every day but not necessarily get some part of myself in each one - what change or new theme would you most like to see?

Another Kind of Proportional Divider

'Another Kind of Proportional Divider' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) This one is an extremely useful moderne device which measures a wall and tells you where to hammer the nails when you want to hang a series of same-size paintings spaced evenly on a wall. Recommended for anyone hanging their own shows!

iDraw: This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear Show at SFMoMA

'This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I highly recommend going to see the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA - and go soon because the show ends 1/25/09! Of course photography was not permitted, but drawing seemed to be OK (it isn't always). The piece I'm standing next to is called 'Maroon' and it's not quite as big as I've made it - though Puryear's beautiful hand-carved and fitted wood, rattan, and tar pieces are quite large-scale.

Mini-Me

The New Year always makes me reflect on time passing, so here's a flash from the past. However, these days I look more like my dad did at my age than like the little girl in a velvet dress that I once was. (I guess even feminist mom gave in to the cute factor on occasion)

Kay's Monets

'Kay's Monets' acrylic paint and pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) There are some things I really can't figure out about how he made these... I may be obsessed with this painting for awhile.

That Monet was a Brilliant Dude

'That Monet was a Brilliant Dude'acrylic paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Brilliant use of color anyway!

In the process of moving things around to accommodate ongoing construction on the house and my studio, I unearthed some of my mother's art books... soon all the art books will have a proper home built-in between studio and bedroom - I can't wait. In any event, Monet seemed to fit right in with my recent foliage explorations.

I Like to Bring the Forest Indoors

'I Like to Bring the Forest Indoors' acrylic paint self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay in which she is dwarfed by a dingle leaf of a split=leaf philodendron. (Click to view same image larger.) But sometimes it seems my jungle plants are taking over my studio.

iDraw: I Stood in the Woods...

'iDraw: I Stood in the Woods...' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I stood in the woods at Sausal Creek, and drew on my iPod with the Brushes application. I've been very keen on making images with 'real' paint lately, but given my schedule, it's not always realistic. Especially on days when I train in Aikido, I will sometimes need to use methods that require less cleanup. Anyway, I continue to be thrilled to be able to draw digitally, anytime, anywhere. And Brushes is definitely my favorite application so far for doing so.

Tennessee Valley Beach

'Tennessee Valley Beach' watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay in which she is dwaefed by the typical oceanside cliffs of the California Coast. (Click to view same image larger.) My friend, painter Anne Longo, and I hiked through Tennessee Valley and sat on the beach painting. I can't remember the last time I tried to paint 'en plein air' but it was easier to deal with now that I've had so much more experience with watercolors. I put myself in at the far end of the cove in my red hat and pants but I decided to leave out the dead beached seal.

Grey Extension Lamp of my Youth

'Grey Clamp-Lamp of my Youth' contour line self-portrait in pen by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay with clamp lamp and other studio objects around her.. (Click to view same image larger.) This lamp was given to me when I went to college - we won't say how many eons ago that was. Many extension lamps have come into my studio since then - hovering over my drafting table for a few years before breaking - the socket burns out, the switch stops working. Sometimes repairs are possible, sometimes not. But this old, grey, somewhat battered, all-metal work horse has provided light in my life for... OK, let's admit it - almost 30 years - without faltering. So the old aphorism really holds - they just don't make things like they used to! And while I'm appreciating the lamp, let me also tip my hat to Dave Alsop - thanks for the gift, all those years ago!

Active Rest

'Active Rest' watercolor self-portrait from imagination by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Active rest is a term we use in the Alexander Technique to refer to lying in this position and consciously directing yourself to let go of all unnecessary tension. You definitely should not be worrying about whether there's going to be an earthquake which causes the ladder to fall on you.

Postcards From SE Asia: Reflected in my Seatback Video Screen

I was on 10 separate aircraft on this trip, ranging from super-sized cross-Pacific jumbo jets to 15 passenger 2-prop mountain planes. In every case the flight was on time, all connections were made, and my baggage arrived intact. Kudos to ANA, Thai Air and Nok Air.
