iDraw: Whodunnit? (Wearing My Mother's Tweed Deerstalker)

'iDraw: Whodunnit? (Wearing My Mother's Tweed Deerstalker)' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) If you look closely you can see the whole drawing is made with '?' in different fonts, using the Type Drawing App on my iPod Touch. The App makes it much much easier than what those patient people who do this with manual typewriters go through! (google typewriter art for examples).

iDraw: What Type Am I?

No, it's not another facebook quiz! I'll answer my own question... I'm a multi-app type. It took 3 apps to make this: TypeDrawing, Brushes & JJackson Pollock.

iDraw: Fun But Frustrating

It's particularly hard to get small details like eyeballs, when the paint is likely to splat all over the place! I did do a sketch from a photo in Sketches, almost none of which is now visible after painting on it with the 'Jackson Pollack' app.

'iDraw: I Don't Have a TV but I Watch Alot of Star Trek' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Even after all the different series and characters and species and adventures, if I'm going to imagine myself as a known person in that universe, it's still Mr. Spock.

iDraw: Sketchinz!

' Sketchinz!' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)This was done in Sketchinz I've been wondering for awhile if someone would come out with a program like this. It's a sort of modern-day etch-a-sketch. You have a cursor on the screen, you move it by tilting, and as it moves it draws a line.

There are a few settings for line thickness and color. You can use a photo as a background to trace, as I did here. There is no erase and no undo. If you're not using a photo you can sort of erase by using a thick white line, but there isn't anything to take you back to the underlying photo once you've made a line in any color.

My other complaint is that the setting to stop drawing so you can move the cursor to a new location is not nearly sensitive enough - it usually takes me a few hits to get it to stop drawing and meanwhile if you aren't holding your device completely still & level, it's making a line. However, the cursor moves really quite slowly so you do have quite a lot more control than you mighr expect. As a future feature though, I'd like to be able to set the speed of movement and sensitivity to tilt. Last, the website claims you can't save images in the free version. Well, you can't save hi-resolution images but you can take screen shots, as I did here. And that's my iDraw report for tonight!

iDraw: Small Woodland Abstract

This was done on my iPod Touch in iDoodle 2 because, unlike Brushes, it allowed me to change the background without changing the drawing. Thus I could pick and choose how I wanted to draw on top of my photo, and then take the photo away altogether. Thanks to the iDoodle folks for this great feature! Continuing the iPod Drawing Ap review portion of my recent nlogs, what was frustrating was how many steps it took to use the eyedropper and then go back to drawing. It would also be good if the line size and opacity sliders were in the same dialog box. But those are just wishes for future interface improvements - in the here and now, it did what I needed it to do.

On the Aiki

...for Guy Steven's 40th birthday party. The Aiki is Guy's boat - I was amused to note that the colors of paint chips used included regatta, speedboat, catamaran and victory. I wasn't looking at the names when I chose colors - I see in retrospect that I actually rejected kayak. And can you guess which of those colors are purples and which are yellows?

Ralph Lauren Power

'Ralph Lauren Power' cut paper self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay of her hand raised in a fist made from Ralph Lauren paint chips. (Click to view same image larger.) Another entry in my bad High School poster art series (the other one was my illustration of getting vaccinations before my trip to Thailand last year.) In any event, it sure looks political, but my only intentions were form and color and continuing to play with my 10+ years of collected paint chips.

(Click to view same image larger.) Tomorrow I'm giving a kirigami paper cut demonstration to the Los Gatos Art Association, so this evening I made two kirigami paper cuts of my hands holding scissors. As you can see, they look pretty similar when folded up, but quite different unfolded.

And if what you're doing isn't working - try someting else! I suppose that applies equally to drawing and bowling. In any event, this is from our TAEC class trip to Albany Bowl to observe and teach the Alexander Technique in activity - working on each other while working on bowling.

'Shopping for Rugs at Ikea' pencil sketch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I was helping Dottie figure out if there were any appropriate rugs at Ikea for her new apartment - but not all the rugs had sizes & prices on the floor nor were they all in the catlogue, making it very difficult to figure out. Now don't groan - there's an art to getting in and out of Ikea without getting lost (and preferably without buying anything). It's called Ikea-do. Wish I had a black belt in it but I don't ;)
