iDraw: In Vogue

'In Vogue' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I guess if I have a theme this month, it's trying out all the latest free draw, paint, sketch, doodle, etc programs for the iPod Touch, the more idiosynchratic, the better. In keeping with that, I used three different applications to create this image. I did the initial drawing in Kid's Paint , which chooses a new line thickness and color randomly each time you lift your finger and put it back down. I then tinkered with the eyes in Sketches. Last, I smushed it around in OilCanvas , which is sort of like the old "auto van Gogh" feature in the original Painter program for the Mac which came out some ten years ago. Unfortunately, although I like the combined effect, something about moving it through all those programs left me with a pretty low quality image file.

iDraw: Stealing From Myself

'Stealing From Myself' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) The source for some of these recent images is neither the mirror nor a photo, but rather my own previous drawings of myself (mostly drawings that I considered less successful in their original incarnations.)

iDraw: This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear Show at SFMoMA

'This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I highly recommend going to see the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA - and go soon because the show ends 1/25/09! Of course photography was not permitted, but drawing seemed to be OK (it isn't always). The piece I'm standing next to is called 'Maroon' and it's not quite as big as I've made it - though Puryear's beautiful hand-carved and fitted wood, rattan, and tar pieces are quite large-scale.

'Never Assume' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Never assume that just because something is easy one day, it will be easy another day. Hubris, hubris, hubris. Had to do about 20 drawings of myself today to get one I was willing to post....

iDraw: It's Getting Easier

'It's Getting Easier' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) The process of drawing these is definitely getting more facile, which is appropriate to something I do every day. Still, there is an unexpected pleasure in it getting easier, and in being able to see the ease in the drawings.

iDraw: It Feels Like Friday...

'It Feels Like Friday...' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)...but it's only Monday night. This was done swapping back and forth between Brushes for the washes of color and Sketches for the clean lines in preset colors (both on the iPod Touch).

iDraw: Preparing For a Show

'Preparing For a Show' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) This week, most of my studio time is going to preparing for a show - so I expect there will be alot of quick portraits, like this one! This show will be the first physical-world exhibit of selections from the portrait project.

iDraw: This Week I Returned to Evening Aikido

' This Week I Returned to Evening Aikido' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Seems like I keep turning to Sketches for a quick, simple drawing. Like having magic markers or colored pencils rather than messing around with paint. I did this one in the car after class, before heading home over the bridge. Aikido was still in my body, if not in front of my eyes.

iDraw: Sketch 'N Twist

One aspect of using the video camera in my laptop to draw from is that since it's down on my lap, I'm looking up at my face from below, an unusual view. Here I decided to emphasize that by distorting the drawing I made in Sketches with PhotoTwist.

'iDraw: Tousled Hair of Early Morning - First Day of School in New Location' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay, in which she reviews iPod touch.iphone drawing aps. (Click to view same image larger.) This was done entirely in Sketches. It works well as long as I think only of flat lines in limited colors - sort of like a printmaking process.

iDraw: Happy Sketch from Tennessee Valley

This was done entirely in Sketches, which works nicely as long as I think of it as sort of hard lead colored pencils - nice for making individual lines, not so good for coloring in areas. Like all of the iPod Touch drawing programs, it's also very hard to draw close to the edges- a 'page' that was larger than the screen and could be scrolled would be very welcome. The only program I've used that has that is No. 2, which doesn't have color.

iDraw: Sketches and Brushes

I meant to draw entirely with Sketches today, but I got frustrated by the limited colors, single line type with hard edges, and lack of opacity control. So I finished the face in Brushes, leaving everything else as it was from Sketches. Strangely, it looks like the blue background gained an odd texture during the import to Brushes from the saved photos.
