Be Afraid, Very Afraid
I can look at a de Kooning and make these sort of interesting images that don't actually look like de Koonings. But if I look at myself, or at nothing, and try to make a similar drawing - well, it doesn't work. I can see what he drew, and how it relates to reality. But when I look at reality, I can't see what he might have drawn. And I can't see what I might draw in response to what he might have drawn... Never mind, this is getting too complicated.Labels: 2009, artist, contemporary, daily, every day, julia kay, Media: Magic Markers, painter, portrait, Process: From Other Artwork, Process: From Photo(s), Process: Left-handed, self-portrait, Style: de Kooning, Style: Loose and Scribbly, Subject: Other Artists, Where: San Francisco (Florida St.)

Seussical!
A friend is involved in a performance of Seussical but I'm not going to be able to make it to Boston to see the show. If you're closer to Boston, please check it out! Meanwhile, the invitation inspired me to imagine myself as The Cat in the Hat - fits right in with all my other hatted portraits!Labels: 2009, artist, contemporary, daily, every day, julia kay, Media: Magic Markers, painter, portrait, Process: From Imagination, Process: From Photo(s), self-portrait, Style: Graphic, Subject: Active Fantasy Life, Subject: Fictional, Subject: Wearing a hat, Where: San Francisco (Florida St.)

Self-Portrait as a Dancing Swirly Girl
My goal was to draw a face using the Doodle Top Dottie gave Ann, however something else happened, no doubt influenced by this morning's perusal of David Friedheim's Scribble & Wiggle Labels: 2009, artist, contemporary, daily, every day, julia kay, Media: Children's Toys, Media: Magic Markers, painter, portrait, Process: From Imagination, self-portrait, Style: Not Quite Human, Subject: Other Artists, Where: San Francisco (Florida St.)

Wooly Julia
The latest little ap we've downloaded to my iPod touch is Wooly Willy, which allows you to draw 'magnetic shaving' mustaches and other hair on either the traditional Wooly Willy image or any image of your own. Here Ann and I have collaborated in giving a previous portrait some additional facial hair. The truth is my eyebrows are a little wild and getting wilder as I get older - so this may not be so far from some future truth. As Picasso famously replied when told Gertrude Stein did not look like his portrait of her "She will...".
This image also seems apropos of printmaker printmaker Ruth Paesch & my attempt to see the Frida Kahlo show at SFMoMA today... I can't say I was directly influenced by the show, however, because the museum was having a power outage and we went to Ocean Beach instead.
Ann says as long as I'm mentioning such fabulous women as Ruth, Gertrude and Frida, let's not forget Patti Smith.
OK, bed time...

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
I cut up an old landscape watercolor painting, planning to draw portraits on the back.
