The Trees of Wesleyan

'The Trees of Wesleyan' cut paper self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I didn't go to my 25th reunion this summer, but the Wesleyan fundraising folks sent a very fancy brochure with many nice pictures and I imagined myself back on campus, sitting under a tree and studying.

And for those wondering about the technical details, this was made with colored electrical tape.

On the Aiki

...for Guy Steven's 40th birthday party. The Aiki is Guy's boat - I was amused to note that the colors of paint chips used included regatta, speedboat, catamaran and victory. I wasn't looking at the names when I chose colors - I see in retrospect that I actually rejected kayak. And can you guess which of those colors are purples and which are yellows?

Ralph Lauren Power

'Ralph Lauren Power' cut paper self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay of her hand raised in a fist made from Ralph Lauren paint chips. (Click to view same image larger.) Another entry in my bad High School poster art series (the other one was my illustration of getting vaccinations before my trip to Thailand last year.) In any event, it sure looks political, but my only intentions were form and color and continuing to play with my 10+ years of collected paint chips.

Kirigami!

'Kirigami!' cut and old fold paper self-portraits of her hands by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay - here the papers are still folded. (Click to view same image larger.) 'Kirigami!' cut and old fold paper self-portraits of her hands by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay - - here the first hand is opened up and found to be almost unrecognizably abstract. (Click to view same image larger.) 'Kirigami!' cut and old fold paper self-portraits of her hands by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay - here the second hand is opened up and found to be a spinning wheel of hands. (Click to view same image larger.) Tomorrow I'm giving a kirigami paper cut demonstration to the Los Gatos Art Association, so this evening I made two kirigami paper cuts of my hands holding scissors. As you can see, they look pretty similar when folded up, but quite different unfolded.

Detail of 'Such Women are Dangerous' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Yes, that was 3 days of a paraphrase of Julius Caeser discussing Cassius in William Shake- speare's 'Julius Caeser'. It would have been fun if it had been someone else discussing Julius, since we sort of share the same name. Alas, that is not how it was written.

Still Not a Disco (Final Version)

'Still Not a Disco (Final Version)' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I adore light. And color. As if that wasn't perfectly clear.

And Happy Birthday to my father - he's wherever it is people go when they're no longer here with us. He gave me my first camera, and thus my first tool for capturing ever-changing, fleeting, world-defining light. Thanks, Dad!
