Did Someone Say Turquoise?: 2009.08.30

Acrylic paint on paper.
7 X 9 inches.
Less than 60 minutes.

OK, that's was a whole lotta fun! More paint than the poor watercolor paper I'm using is built for, though - there's some buckling & I couldn't get it completely flat for the scan. There was also no way it was going to dry in time to scan and post last night, so I'm running a little later than usual.

It's tempting to use a more traditional support (canvas/wood panel) for these but... then they won't mount neatly into my volumes of archived portrait project pieces... what's an OCD artist to do?

Thank you to Jerry Waese, whose fantastic use of red/turquoise inspired me to play in this palette: http://www.flickr.com/photos/waese/3867909854

Yosemite National Park: Descending Sentinel Dome: 2009.08.27

Watercolor and pen on paper.
4 X 6 inches.

At 8,122 FT (2,476 M), Sentinel Dome is the second highest point along the rim of Yosemite Valley (Half-Dome is the highest). It can be reached either by a very short and easy trail from the Taft Point/Sentinal Dome parking lot, or a moderate 5 mile loop trail that also takes in Taft Point and can continue to Glacier Point. I highly recommend the loop trail.

Yosemite National Park: The Other Day, I Saw A Bear: 2009.08.25

Pen and watercolor on paper.
4 X 6 inches.

The bear was in a meadow in Yosemite Valley. Rangers kept the people and bear safe from each other. Nevertheless dozens of bears, usually young ones, are killed by cars on roadways in the park each season.

My new buzz cut, that is. Has to wear a hat for large stretches of this foggy day - who knew! Just like David always says, you do lose alot of heat off of your head!

Wild Rainbow Sorting Hat From Thailand: 2009.08.20

Layers App on iThing

I bought this fabulous hat at a huge market in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where it was among hundreds that were being made by a particular ethnic group/village/hill tribe to be sold to tourists like me. I posed with it in my back yard before giving it as a gift, and made the drawing from the photo.

I Dreamed the Aliens Came for Me: 2009.08.19

I did not actually dream this, I just made it up for the painting.

It looks like I'm bald or have a buzz cut here -- I am actually thinking of getting a buzz cut this weekend, which I've never done before.

Am I There Yet?: 2009.08.15, originally uploaded by Julia Kay.

More paint is not necessarily better!

Still this went though several stages of gobs of paint, paint scraped off, almost thrown out several times, let it dry, work back into it, scrape more paint off, simplify, simplify, simplify.

How come sometimes you do something quickly that's great and other times you work really hard for something that's only OK?

Finger Painted (With Paint): 2009.08.14

This paint stuff is weird. If you draw with a big, thick thing like your finger, then you get a big thick mark - you can't just adjust a slider for a fine line! Plus, you have to wait for it to dry before you can paint over it or scan it in when it's done - very odd.

(These comments indicative of how much I've been working digitially the past few months)

In any event, this 4 X 6 inch painting was done very quickly - 10-15 minutes - using multiple fingers simultaneously - and finally using up the last of the paint left over on my palette from a landscape.

Melancholy in the Morning: 2009.08.13

Or perhaps just not awake yet...
Acrylic on paper, 7 X 9 inches.
Continuing a game I play of using up the leftover paint on the palette, and not adding anything more except white. I don't know - why do I do these things? I guess my curly brain finds them fun!

I really wanted to paint again but I'm just too tired with too many obligations in the morning. Still jackson pollack app on my iThing has it's pleasures. (some color tweaking in photoshop).

Quick Study (Not Quick Enough): 2009.08.09

I kept painting but the light kept changing... and I guess I got annoyed or something because I look quite mean here.( I don't think I'm that mean! )

On the other hand, the thing that really caught my interest was the bright light and the shadows from my glasses, and I do seem to have caught some of that, mean or not mean. :)

In any event, this is acrylic paint on paper from my reflection in a mirror. It's about 9 X 7 inches.

iDraw: Quick Color(tilt) Study: 2009.08.05

.

A very quick sketch using the ColorTilt app on my iPod Touch. I'm finding it very hard to draw in the corners with the current version since the corners activate menus, but otherwise love this app for lots of color & color variations at your finger tips. ( Some other colotTillt examples )

Mmmm... I did a little cleanup in photoshop, too, mostly moving the ear to a better place.

iDraw: Not Inspired: 2009.08.01

Not Inspired: 2009.08.01, originally uploaded by Julia Kay.

This was drawn on my iPid Touch using a new (to me) application called Inspire which seems to have some great features for blending gobs of "paint".However, it was not organized the way my brain works and I found it fairly unintuitive and frustrating. I hear there's an update coming soon so I think I will hold off further explorations until then.
