iDraw: Drawing After Midnight, Again

Drawn with my finger using Paintbook & Layers on my iThing... Just heard about another great-looking app, "Inspire" - will the fun never end?

iDraw: The Coldest Winter I Ever Spent... Was a Summer in San Francisco.

Title generally attributed, apparently falsely, to Mark Twain. Nevertheless it's almost August and I've still been spending many nights bundled up in layers and sleeping cap.

This was drawn from a photo on my iThing using DoodleBuddy, formerly ChalkTalk. It makes the best 'pastel' like mark I know of on iDevices and although it's palette is limited, the color selection is very much to my bright, saturated, taste. Unfortunately the recent upgrade to being able to draw together over the internet and not just over wifi has made it quite buggy when actually trying to draw together.

iDraw: Today Was Not As Productive as I Had Hoped it Would Be: 2009.07.28

This was done very quickly, from imagination, using the Eastern Artist App on my iThing. I love the customizable signature seal/stamps and the Korean paper backgrounds that are provided. I haven't quite sorted out the controls for the pen but it;s good for me to embrace randomness sometimes. It's a good contrast to yesterday's tight piece done over a photo.

iDraw: Stuck in Traffic on the San Francisco Bay Bridge (Again): 2009.07.27

This was done on my iPod Touch using the iDoodle2 and Brushes Apps. No, I didn't draw while driving - but I did take photos while traffic was at a crawl.

iDraw: Julia Knows Whose Nose - Her Nose!

This was done on my iDevice using the new version of the Squiggles App, which has a few really great features such as cut and paste, and saving your working colors to a palette. However, it is not nearly as flexible as some other apps as a full-fledged artist app.

iDraw: In the Rainbow Style of My Younger Self: 2009.07.25

This was done on my iThing using the Layers and Brushes Apps.

This time I'm letting myself be influenced by.... me. If you click on the link to the right for the 1980s, you'll see some of the earlier portraits whose style I've been reconsidering.

Finished At Last?: 1987.04.28 - 2009.07.24

This was a very interesting challenge!

About 1/3 of this was done 22 years ago, pastel on paper. It was finished today on my iPod Touch using the Layers App. Challenge No 1: There really isn't a 'brush' that makes a pastel-like mark, but I think I partially achieved a similar effect. The best iThing pastel mark I've seen is in the ChalkTalk App but it's not a full-fledged drawing program- among other things it has a very limited set of colors.

Challenge No. 2: Well, I don't draw like that anymore. Instead of fixing what I did two decades ago, as I had the urge to do, I had to try to recapture that way of seeing/marking so the parts would match.

Challenge No. 3: I don't *look* like that anymore. I know the first part was very closely observed in the mirror (and then distorted through the funhouse mirror of my brain) but the recent part was done strictly from imagination.

Issues with Layers: I had a perfectly sharp scan of a photo of this drawing to work with, and pretty high res. But between what Apple does and what Layers does, by the time it was in the Layers App it was pretty darn fuzzy. I also wish it was clearer somehow which layer I was marking on - maybe a warning when you're not drawing on the top layer.

Requests for Layers: I would really really like to be able to specify a color/colors to be made transparent on a not otherwise transparent drawing. For instance, in a simpler case, I'd like to be able to import a black on white line drawing and have all the white become transparent. And of course, I would like a chalk/pastel-like "brush".

iDraw: Picasso Started It

Where will it end?

I made my own digital "scratch paper" using the Brushes and NPR apps, so I guess I can take the Scratch Away app off my iThing. Order of aoos used: Brushes, NPR, Brushes.

Not A Cheery Cherry Portrait

This was done with cherry juice and my fingers, toothpicks, a knife, paper towels, and alas, a brush, after pitting cherries for fruit salad.

It must be a summer thing... it turns out to be almost exactly a year since my beet juice series. Overall, cherry juice was much harder to work with and I got pretty frustrated.

I Promised Myself I'd Read Those Legal Papers Tonight

...but I think, once again, it's too late.

Ha! I see I did not put the earpieces on my glasses - they are poised on my nose by magic!

This was done in a traditional way with pen on paper, from photos, mirror and imagination.

Mirrored Elevator Doors

Conference Hotel Room

Last month I was at the Whitcomb Hotel in San Francisco, California, USA, for the Annual General Meeting of the American Society for the Alexander Technique. I wasn't staying at the hotel, but some of my friends were, so when we needed to take a break, we hung out in their room.

This was done in the traditional way with a pen on paper.

We Were All Waiting for the Train

This was done with the PaintBook App on my iPod Touch (I used a photo for reference).

My shortish review of Paintbook is:
Cons: I don't like Paintbook's palette, it doesn't have an eyedropper, there's undo but no redo, and all the line types have a hard edge.

Pros: Very high resolution for an IDraw app (This drawing is 1706X2048), you can change the size of the 'paper', you can turn the 'paper' in addition to zooming, and there are two kinds of opacity - one where you can lighten a dark color, ie like transparent acrylics, and another where you can only darken, ie watercolors. The latter allows me to 'paint' washes that overlap my black lines without affecting the lines themselves.

Heading out of Dodge for the Weekend...

I'll still be drawing, of course, but I won't be posting until early next week. (I just learned via google that 'get out of dodge' as a phrase was made famous by the the TV show Gunsmoke)

iDraw: Whodunnit? (Wearing My Mother's Tweed Deerstalker)

'iDraw: Whodunnit? (Wearing My Mother's Tweed Deerstalker)' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) If you look closely you can see the whole drawing is made with '?' in different fonts, using the Type Drawing App on my iPod Touch. The App makes it much much easier than what those patient people who do this with manual typewriters go through! (google typewriter art for examples).
