Sisters

'Sisters' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Well, January is over, and I think I'll give the childhood series a rest for now. It's been more challenging than I expected - I'm not going to be signing up to be a child-portrait-artist anytime soon.

iDraw: Never Look Back

Here's a similar piece with the same name, from 1982. (Actually I made it in 1982 but I only titled it last year...) Of course by showing the piece from 1982... I am looking back!

The Little Princess - 4 Going on 14

'The Little Princess - 4 Going on 14' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I'm not such a vamp in the source photo, so I suppose I'll try again tomorrow.

iDraw: I Imagined Myself as Edith Head

We've been having a Columbo fest, and I've been meaning to draw myself as Columbo, but tonight I couldn't resist Hollywood costume designer Edith Head, who made a guest appearance as herself on the Columbo episode we watched this evening. Seeing her we also realized that Edith clearly was the inspiration for the costume designer Edna in The Incredibles.

iDraw: One More Day

...until a week's vacation, But between now and vacation I have to give a 160-slide powerpoint presentation in 2 hrs. When I was putting it together, I wasn't sure I had enough material but now I see it's probably too much....

Seussical!

'Seussical!' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) A friend is involved in a performance of Seussical but I'm not going to be able to make it to Boston to see the show. If you're closer to Boston, please check it out! Meanwhile, the invitation inspired me to imagine myself as The Cat in the Hat - fits right in with all my other hatted portraits!

'All Work and No Play...' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) ...makes Julia a tired girl making a boring drawing. Well, I shouldn't say no play - I only spent 12 hours at the office this weekend, so there was a little time left to hang out and crack jokes with AK.

Self-Portrait as a Dancing Swirly Girl

'Self-Portrait as a Dancing Swirly Girl' magic marker self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) My goal was to draw a face using the Doodle Top Dottie gave Ann, however something else happened, no doubt influenced by this morning's perusal of David Friedheim's Scribble & Wiggle

iDraw: This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear Show at SFMoMA

'This Morning I Saw the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA' digital iPod Touch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I highly recommend going to see the Martin Puryear show at SFMoMA - and go soon because the show ends 1/25/09! Of course photography was not permitted, but drawing seemed to be OK (it isn't always). The piece I'm standing next to is called 'Maroon' and it's not quite as big as I've made it - though Puryear's beautiful hand-carved and fitted wood, rattan, and tar pieces are quite large-scale.

My First Camera

'My First Camera' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I was not quite five when the photo this is based on was taken - and I'm still at it! Actually, I even still have this camera, a half-frame 35mm, which I'm pretty sure does still work.

On the Bench

'On the Bench' pen self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.)It's interesting how the easy part is sometimes the hardest - I thought my face would be hardest, but it's the bench I messed up! This was in NYC, and, no, there wasn't an earthquake in progress - the bench wasn't even tilting! I'm guessing I was about a year old but I don't know for sure. Although my photographer father carefully noted how long he exposed each print, there are no dates on the photos I'm working from for these drawings.

Mini-Me

The New Year always makes me reflect on time passing, so here's a flash from the past. However, these days I look more like my dad did at my age than like the little girl in a velvet dress that I once was. (I guess even feminist mom gave in to the cute factor on occasion)
