Quick Study Quickly Revised

'Quick Study Quickly Revised' pen and watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Usually when I use pen and watercolor, I draw with the pen first; in this case the pen has come after. I've been trying to allow things to be more amorphous, but it's a challenge for me - I'm strongly inclined to define the edges of things.

Shopping for Rugs at Ikea

'Shopping for Rugs at Ikea' watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) 'Shopping for Rugs at Ikea' pencil sketch self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) I was helping Dottie figure out if there were any appropriate rugs at Ikea for her new apartment - but not all the rugs had sizes & prices on the floor nor were they all in the catlogue, making it very difficult to figure out. Now don't groan - there's an art to getting in and out of Ikea without getting lost (and preferably without buying anything). It's called Ikea-do. Wish I had a black belt in it but I don't ;)

A Little Fuzzy Around the Edges...

'A Little Fuzzy Around the Edges...' watercolor self-portrait from imagination by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Hats off to Mr. Dusty for getting our line back online this evening so I could post this!)

Big Orange Schnozz

'Big Orange Schnozz' left-handed, mostly blind watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) This was done 'peeking' again. Specifically, my eyes were open while I mixed paint, dipped my brush, and positioned over the paper. My eyes were closed while I actually painted, guessing when I might be out of paint on the brush and needing to load it up again. Also, this was quite early in the morning - before the dental cleaning which was before school which was before work which was before doing my homework...

Organs, Organs, Where are my Organs?

'Organs, Organs, Where are my Organs?' pencil and watercolor self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) As part of my Alexander Technique Teacher Training, I'm learning some anatomy - but coloring in the Anatomy Coloring Book doesn't really work for me - to understand things I have to try to draw them myself. Too bad organs don't actually come in these nice colors.

Active Rest

'Active Rest' watercolor self-portrait from imagination by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Active rest is a term we use in the Alexander Technique to refer to lying in this position and consciously directing yourself to let go of all unnecessary tension. You definitely should not be worrying about whether there's going to be an earthquake which causes the ladder to fall on you.
