Goldfinger

'Goldfinger' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) We're having a James Bond Netflixfest here, starting with the best, the Sean Conneries. Hey, I bet he and Q would have loved an iPod Touch ;)

Fistful of Portfolio

'Fistful of Portfolio' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Couldn't resist the self-reference! Thank you Ann for my wonderful iPod touch birthday present (yes, it's 'late' because we were waiting for the next version) - a fabulous toy/tool that allows me to have my whole portfolio in my pocket, as well as maps, music, and so much more!

Productive Procrastination

'Productive Procrastination' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) It was time to do my state sales taxes, so naturally I spent most of the afternoon cleaning instead.

I've Got My Helmet On

'I've Got My Helmet On' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) As the Bob's said, 'I've got my helmet on, nothing can do me wrong.' I'm also wearing my red union suit which is part wool. Have I mentioned that it's been cold and dank here lately? On the left is a rendition of Sun Dances with Monstera and Me and on the right is Phideaux. It would be cool if I'd made this picture an image map so you click on each painting on the wall to get to an image of the real painting, but I didn't.

Neutral Tones

'Neutral Tones' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) There's not alot of vibrant color at the office. But actually, it's pretty hard/interesting mixing all those neutral tans and taupes and greys and also hard/not interesting to get them to scan in and display correctly.

Metatarsalgia

'Metatarsalgia' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Because of the metatarsalgia I developed on my Thailand trip, most shoes are not comfortable, and I find myself wearing my bright green crocs with their large vent holes, even in our recent rain storms.

Samurai!

No, it's not my second degree black-belt test in Aikido, it's my face in a cardboard cut-out in San Francisco's Japantown, where we attempted unsuccessfully to run some errands this afternoon. Well, the errands failed but the unagi don and green tea ice cream were a success!

Vermont Street

There are fabulous trees in the Berkeley hills, where I went to exchange Alexander work with my friend Amira Alvarez. While you're waiting for me to get my certification (at least another 1.5 years), if you're in the East Bay, I recommend that you take some lessons from her!

After Hours

'After Hours' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) It's just me and the cleaning equipment in the work elevator after-hours. I was hoping for the kind of magic that happens sometimes when you're not too committed to your subject and open to what the universe has to offer, but this evening the universe has offered over-worked washes and muddy colors.

Egg Shop Breakfast

'Egg Shop Breakfast' contour line self-portrait in ink by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) After the fifth and final day of East Bay Aikido's Kan Geiko (winter training; in our case 6:30 AM classes all week), a group of us went out to breakfast with Tom Gambell Sensei. However, having gotton up at 5:30 AM all week, I just didn't have it in me this evening to draw everybody - so we just have the mystery elbows on each side of me. Nevertheless, thank you everybody for the great training, and excellent breakfast company!

Folding Our Hakamas

'Folding Our Hakamas' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Cliff Bernstein and I, folding our hakamas after the third day of Kan Geiko at East Bay Aikido. And thank-you to Guy Stevens for the photos. Can't wait to see Cliff and Guy's black belt tests - soon, I hope!

Not So Early Morning

I was barely awake, but our good friend Tor, King of the Singing Contractors, was already hard at work installing a light fixture.

'Bye-Bye, Sony Monitor!' self-portrait by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) We decided to finally "trade-in" our decade-old 17" Sony CRT for a modern, light-weight, flat-screen monitor.

It was my first day back at work but as I only worked a half day, Ann and I were able to go out for a snack afterwards at Church Chow.

And my body seems to have adjusted to the heat - luckily I have a new scarf from Dottie to keep me warm!

Home Again, Home Again

Back in my studio with all my tools and toys available, but I think I will keep making these day-specific narrative watercolors, at least for awhile. Watercolor has never been my easiest medium but now that I have some experience I was thinking of sticking my nose in some technique books - but some good friends are advising me not to - to just keep exploring it on my own. We'll see.

Postcards From SE Asia: Reflected in my Seatback Video Screen

I was on 10 separate aircraft on this trip, ranging from super-sized cross-Pacific jumbo jets to 15 passenger 2-prop mountain planes. In every case the flight was on time, all connections were made, and my baggage arrived intact. Kudos to ANA, Thai Air and Nok Air.
