Late Lunch at Park Chow

'Late Lunch at Park Chow' crayon self-portrait drawing by San Francisco Bay Area artist Julia Kay. (Click to view same image larger.) Often when we eat at Park Chow, we ask for a crayon set up and draw while we wait for our food. The colors in our crayon cup weren't very exciting today but I went ahead and drew this picture of myself while waiting for my pizza with spring veg and arugula. Mmmm... Something Different, Day 3 (final)

'Something Different, Day 3' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. Here it is again, one last time. (Click here to see the three stages next to each other.) The changes are mostly at top and bottom - from the filtrum down and from the ears up (mostly just the hair up top). I had to redo the lower right, which I had been perfectly happy with, because some kind of flashing light fuss outside distracted me and my sleeve swiped across and erased it. Well, that's the essential problem of working this way in charcoal - you can get incredible subtly of values but the medium itself is fleeting no matter how much stuff you spray on it - on the sprays change it, too, mostly darkening everything.Detail of 'Something Different, Day 3' self-portrait by Julia Kay. White Shirt

'White Shirt' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. I had a long day of work and appointments, finally arriving home late after Aikido. I didn't have the attention I wanted to have to continue working on the charcoal, so I took a break and made this continuous contour puzzle-piece using "real" Sharpies. Unfortunately, although the colors on the caps are good, the markers themselves are not nearly as nice as those Chinese fakes from the corner store. Well, they are good for the contour line part, they're not as good for the broad areas of color. Detail of 'White Shirt' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. Something Different, Day 2

Detail of 'Something Different, Day 2' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. Well, it's the same but different... The differences are mostly in the eyes, nose and brow but there was a little tweaking here and there in other places, too. Tomorrow: can I do something about that hair? I put it in quite enthusiastically with a darker, harder, compressed charcoal that will not be so easy to push about. Detail of 'Something Different, Day 2' self-portrait by Julia Kay. And Now For Something Completely Different...

'And Now For Something Completely Different...' charcoal self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. Well, it's been a marvelous month of magic markers and quick draws, but I thought I'd take a break from the fast stroke and strong color and do some slower, more deliberate work in the grey/browns of charcoal. This was at least partly inspired by some ~25 year old drawings I've re-disovered while working (slowly) on getting the archives loaded on here. My plan was to keep working on the same drawing over the course of a week (posting each day's changes here), but now that I've started, I don't think it will take that long. I may just leave it, or may work on it for another day or two but I don't think it will take 7 days. Still, I like this change of pace and I think I will stick to charcoal, one way or another, for this week. Detail of 'And Now For Something Completely Different...' self-portrait by Julia Kay. 'Too Young to be a Blue-Haired Lady' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. Sometimes it's clear what the picture is about, and form, color, expression and title just fall into place. That was not the case here - this one's really waiting for a better title - feel free to suggest something! Detail of Too Young to be a Blue-Haired Lady' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Never Mind the Evil Poodle

'Never Mind The Evil Poodle', a self-portrait by Julia Kay, which links to a larger image of the same drawing. For a change of pace, I was going to draw an evil poodle whose photo I found on the internet but it didn't start out well and I returned to my stated purpose - drawing myself. Meanwhile, for the second day in a row, I've finished past midnight into the next day but cheated the post time so it fits the day it's intended for...Detail of 'Never Mind The Evil Poodle', a self-portrait by Julia Kay, which links to a larger image of the same detail.

Pink Ink

'Pink Ink' self-portrait by Julia Kay. Click to view same image larger. I just made this one up without reference to mirror or photo... I guess it doesn't look any less like me than any of the others! Strange how inclined I am to push the eyes together, unable to allow the proper space between the twin beams of attention...
