In California we have a referendum system where various elected bodies and any group of citizens that gets enough signatures can get propositions on the ballot for us to vote on.

This year we had about 8 state propositions and about 20 city and local propositions. Not to mention lots of people running for office from state governor to local council members, school board, and judges.

Trying to be a good citizen and make informed decisions can really make your head spin!

Today’s portrait is of British Artist & Illustrator Anita Davies. I especially enjoy Anita’s delicate drawings detailing the comings and goings of her daily life, and the snippets of stories she interweaves with the images.

You can see Anita’s artwork on her flickr imagestream: www.flickr.com/photos/anitadavies/
And website: artbyanita.blogspot.com/

Photos of Anita and other artists’ portraits of her can be seen here: www.flickr.com/groups/portraitparty/discuss/7215762415813…

JuliaKay-JKPPWe’re having a Portrait Party on flickr – more than 300 artists drawing each other! Here is Anita’s portrait of me from the party. If you’re an artist who’d like to draw/paint other flickr artists, please join the Portrait Party at: www.flickr.com/groups/portraitparty/

This was all done with one brush, originally sampled from some clouds.

It shows that tracing does not guarantee anything – although I have her position in the frame accurately, I have not caught the least bit of her great elegant beauty. It must have been the influence of Halloween – I’ll have to try again when beauty is more the theme of the day!

I got inspired by Helene’s ‘App Mashery’ demo of Tripping Fest, to give it another try.

My friend and I had big plans for the day after the conference but because I felt a cold coming on, we spent most of the day curled up on the couch talking – which was delightful.

In the evening, we took the train downtown for dinner. It was too noisy to talk, so while my friends worked on their crossword and sudoku puzzles, naturally, I drew.

Despite all my care (washing my hands constantly, moving away from coughing people in subway cars) I could feel the beginnings of a cold coming on – and it did not make me happy.

I’m going to need to examine some photos of the scene to figure out who’s who. What I remember is Tim Schorre and Anne Watkins on the far right…
