May 2010: I intend to continue to profile contemporary artists once or twice a week. On the other days, I intend to draw… whatever I darn well feel like!

These are only very, very loosely based on American artist Rachel Shlueter’s photo of herself smoking, but they give me an opportunity to say how much I love her paintings – whether portraits of people, animals or avians, landscapes, figure studies or other subjects entirely, I’m drawn to her delicious color, thick paint strokes, and solid characters.

You can see Rachel’s artwork on her flickr imagestream: www.flickr.com/photos/rkschlueter/

Photos of Rachel and other artists’ portraits of her can be seen here: www.flickr.com/groups/portraitparty/discuss/7215762366843…

Julia Kay We’re having a Portrait Party on flickr – more than 150 artists drawing each other! Here is Rachel’s portrait of me from the party. If you’re an artist who’d like to draw/paint other flickr artists, please join the Portrait Party at: www.flickr.com/groups/portraitparty/
