Today’s portrait is of the Brazilian engineer and artist, Murilo S. Romeiro. I couldn’t resist making a painting from his beautiful photo of his shadow of himself taking the photo… layer upon layer of removal and presence. I love working with shadows and was happy to find this opportunity to bring one to the Portrait Party.

The thing I like best in Murilo’s work is the way he layers and juxtaposes outside influences with his personal vision – painting himself as such varied figures as Norman Rockwell and USA President Obama, transforming Cooper’s self-portrait with camera into a witty take on Munch’s The Scream, and combining images of Ben Shahn and NC Mallory into a tribute to them both.
