June 2010: I intend to continue to profile contemporary artists once or twice a week. On the other days, I intend to draw… whatever I darn well feel like!

Today’s subject is British artist Francesca Whetnall. She has an incredible range and seems equally at home with detailed perspective drawings of historical buildings, colorful watercolor portraits, and digital manipulations.

As usual, I have not succeeded in portraying her Mona Lisa smile but hope some of my enjoyment of working from her very clear photo comes through in the colors.

Polish Artist Beata Wielgos-Dunikowska is known as Smooth Design on flickr. In these portraits, she’s older, grumpier, and more colorful – just as I indicated in the Party guidelines!

I really was trying to get Beata’s wonderful smile in all three but sometimes these things don’t work out…

These are only very, very loosely based on American artist Rachel Shlueter’s photo of herself smoking, but they give me an opportunity to say how much I love her paintings – whether portraits of people, animals or avians, landscapes, figure studies or other subjects entirely, I’m drawn to her delicious color, thick paint strokes, and solid characters.

Today’s artist is Kathleen. She draws a variety of subjects from fashion with an emphasis on shoes to subway commuters and, of course, portraits. I especially like her series of self-portraits on the theme ‘What I Wish I Wore’ and her well-composed subway drawings. Speaking of wishing, I wish I’d had more time for my portrait of her – I hope to post a second version later on with more refined facial features.

Today’s artist is Dutch Painter Herman Schouwenburg. Herman makes fantastic, quirky portraits of everyone from presumed strangers in his ‘People I Met’ series to those most close to home in his group portrait ‘Family Dinners’ series. I love the expressiveness of his work, his great eye for the right vivid colors to enhance the emotions of a scene, and how he conveys even difficult situations such as policemen barring the way or an adult scolding a child in such a way that we feel sympathy with all the characters.
