June 2010: I intend to continue to profile contemporary artists once or twice a week. On the other days, I intend to draw… whatever I darn well feel like!

Polish Artist Beata Wielgos-Dunikowska is known as Smooth Design on flickr. In these portraits, she’s older, grumpier, and more colorful – just as I indicated in the Party guidelines!

I really was trying to get Beata’s wonderful smile in all three but sometimes these things don’t work out…

You can see Beata’s wonderful drawings and watercolors on her flickr imagestream: www.flickr.com/photos/ata_art/

These are only very, very loosely based on American artist Rachel Shlueter’s photo of herself smoking, but they give me an opportunity to say how much I love her paintings – whether portraits of people, animals or avians, landscapes, figure studies or other subjects entirely, I’m drawn to her delicious color, thick paint strokes, and solid characters.

Today’s artist is Kathleen. She draws a variety of subjects from fashion with an emphasis on shoes to subway commuters and, of course, portraits. I especially like her series of self-portraits on the theme ‘What I Wish I Wore’ and her well-composed subway drawings. Speaking of wishing, I wish I’d had more time for my portrait of her – I hope to post a second version later on with more refined facial features.

This is another quick sketch of iPhone painter Patricio Villarroel, using the Harmonious app which he just introduced me to. I’m such an art app junkie I immediately bought it. It seems alot like livesketch, I will have to explore the differences.

I never thought I’d find a vector drawing program so much fun! I think it’s helping me to see the shapes of things where normally I get focused on line, color & light. It’s also really nice that you can change the color and transparency of any shape at any time.
