June 2010: I intend to continue to profile contemporary artists once or twice a week. On the other days, I intend to draw… whatever I darn well feel like!

Today’s artist is American Helene Goldberg, known as HGBerk on flickr. She draws and paints with her finger on digital devices such as iPhones and iPads. Although you will find portraits, landscapes, dreamscapes, and other subjects in her photostream, it’s her colorful, layered, spatial, abstracts that draw me in and intrigue me the most.

You can see Helene’s artwork on her flickr imagestream: www.flickr.com/photos/hgberk/

Photos of Helene and other artists’ portraits of her can be seen here: www.flickr.com/groups/portraitparty/discuss/7215762361359…

I kind of went crazy with the variations – I got some good color effects but never quite captured Helene’s smile – I’ll have to give it a fresh try some time.

Julia for JKPPWe’re having a Portrait Party on flickr – almost 300 artists drawing each other! Here is Helene’s portrait of me from the party. If you’re an artist who’d like to draw/paint other flickr artists, please join the Portrait Party at: www.flickr.com/groups/portraitparty/

Today’s artist is Canadian Donna Mulholland, known as The Happy Painter on flickr. Her work is indeed happy – I love the colorful, loose and easy (seeming) marks Donna makes whether she’s painting portraits or illustrating her life.

Wainting on the commuter train – trying out the new Brushes brushes and as usual a face emerged – only this time it was Dan’s face. Go figure.

June 2010: I intend to continue to profile contemporary artists once or twice a week. On the other days, I intend to draw… whatever I darn well feel like!

Today’s portrait is of British painter Sue Hodnett. She makes fabulous, energetic. color-filled paintings that are so loose and splashy it’s hard to imagine they can be anything but abstracts. Yet her control of this seeming chaos is so great that she creates wonderful landscapes, cityscapes, garden scenes and portraits of people and sculptures with unmistakable likenesses.

It seems a little odd to have drawn her so clean-edged, when in my mind’s eye she has as much splash as her paintings – I’ll have to dive back in for a looser one.

Today’s artist is American Mike Ryon, known as flynryon on flickr. He makes wonderfully layered and textured drawings on his iPhone and it was his PaintBook App pieces built up from layers of semi-tansparent shapes, that inspired me to start fooling around with a similar technique in Quill, leading to pieces such as this portrait of Mike.

Special thanks to JMT_Artist ( www.flickr.com/photos/jmt_artist/ ) who dropped in on my image stream and commented on one of my Quill pieces "have you thought about doing these in 3d with wire and perspex." I’m not really set up for cutting perspex but the comment got me thinking about what I could cut them out of and the relationship between the Quill pieces and my papercuts in general. Later I found out a friend of a friend works at a laser-cutting place so maybe there will be some perspex eventually… Anyway, thank you John Michael Taylor!

And of course thank you to Herman for loaning his visage, more or less. You can see Herman’s fantastic artwork on his flickr imagestream: www.flickr.com/photos/hermanschildert/
